The Accuracy of Flange Ball Bearings

It’s crucial to differentiate a standalone flange ball bearing component from a complete mounted housing bearing unit. While the former is the bearing itself (a ball bearing with flange), terms like flange block bearing, pillow block flange bearing, or flange pillow block typically describe an assembly where a bearing insert is pre-installed into a separate flanged housing.

TFL provides both the individual flanged ball bearings and these complete housed unit solutions.

Common Mounting Configurations: 2 Bolt and 4 Bolt Flange Bearings

Flanged ball bearings are available in several mounting styles to suit different load and stability requirements.

The most prevalent are the 2 bolt flange bearing (also known as a two bolt flange bearing) and the 4 bolt flange bearing (or four bolt flange bearing). These designations refer to the number of bolt holes integrated into the flange itself, allowing direct attachment to a machine frame or panel.

Generally, the 4 bolt flange configuration offers enhanced stability and load distribution compared to the two-bolt version.

Applications and Sizing for Flange Ball Bearings

The ease of mounting makes flange ball bearings ideal for applications across various industries, including conveyor systems, automation, packaging machinery, and light-duty power transmission where precise shaft location is needed without complex housing designs.

TFL offers these versatile bearings in a wide array of standard inch and metric sizes, including common requirements like the 1 inch bearing with flange (or 1 flange bearing), ensuring you can find the right fit for your specific shaft diameter and load needs.

Flanged Ball Bearing Selection and Distributor Sourcing Guide

For replacement enquiries, start with the complete bearing number and quantity. If the original number is unavailable, five dimensions help identify the correct flanged ball bearing: bore diameter, outside diameter, bearing width, flange outside diameter and flange thickness. The outer-ring flange provides a locating surface against the housing. Closure, material and other specifications can be confirmed where required.

How to Choose from the Product List

Start with the bearing number on the existing part, drawing or stock list. If the number is incomplete, compare bore diameter (d), outside diameter (D) and width (B), followed by flange outside diameter (Df) and flange thickness. These five dimensions are important for replacement matching because two bearings with the same basic dimensions may have different flange sizes.

The flange helps locate the bearing against a housing face, but it does not automatically increase axial load capacity or compensate for shaft misalignment. Mounting fit, load, speed and lubrication can be checked when the original specification is unavailable or the operating requirements differ. Our flanged ball bearing size-check guide provides additional dimensional guidance.

Common Series and Model Range

TFL supplies F6700, F63800, F6800, F6900, F6000 and F6200 series flanged ball bearings, along with selected SF variants, F636ZZ and inch-size FR8ZZ and FR10ZZ models. Metric bore sizes range from 6 to 50 mm. Different series and configurations may share the same bore while having different outside diameters, widths and flange dimensions.

Open vs ZZ Selection and 2RS Requirements

Open bearings allow direct access for oil or grease lubrication and are commonly used in clean assemblies with separate contamination protection. ZZ versions have metal shields on both sides to help retain lubricant and reduce light contamination with low running friction. These shields are not waterproof seals.

The standard range includes open and ZZ shielded models. For a rubber-sealed 2RS requirement, send the complete bearing number or required dimensions and quantity. Seal type, dimensions, operating speed and availability can then be confirmed for the proposed configuration.

Open and Shielded Versions Can Have Different Dimensions

For example, the listed F6700 measures 10 × 15 × 3 mm with a 16 mm flange OD, while F6700ZZ measures 10 × 15 × 4 mm with a 16.5 mm flange OD. Although both share the same bore and bearing body diameter, their widths and flange dimensions differ. The complete dimensions are therefore important when replacing one version with another.

Model Code Example: F6800ZZ

The F6800ZZ flanged ball bearing is an example of a common flanged bearing designation. F identifies the flanged version, 6800 identifies the base bearing series and size, and ZZ indicates metal shields on both sides. The listed dimensions are 10 × 19 × 5 mm, with a 21 mm flange OD and 1 mm flange thickness. Material, clearance, tolerance and lubrication requirements can be confirmed from the full product specification.

Key Specifications for a Quotation

You do not need to provide every detail before requesting a quote. A complete bearing number and quantity are often enough to begin. If the original number is missing or a replacement needs further confirmation, additional dimensions, drawings or operating requirements help identify the correct model more quickly.
